Running a Vegan delivery restaurant
during the pandemic
When the corona pandemic hit, I lived in a student house with one of my friends: Emiel. The restaurant he used to work in as a chef had to close down, so at the end of 2020 he got quite bored of playing video games at home.
During that time I was cooking a lot of vegan dishes and wanted to help out, so I asked Emiel if he was down for running a vegan delivery restaurant together. He was immediately on board and within a month we ran our delivery restaurant from a lunchroom's kitchen. It was called Vegan033, after the netcode of our hometown Amersfoort.
Besides having a lot of fun, we had to do everything ourselves: from cooking to marketing and from accounting to taking orders. To smooth out this process, I built a custom order system in Vue.js and Electron. Within a few hours we had a simple but modular system that allowed us to take orders very quickly and print them using a thermal printer.
After running the restaurant for 5 months, we closed down. We had a lot of fun, but it was time to move on. It had been a great experience and we learned a lot about running a business.
